Levi Russell

Levi Christopher Russell was a Black American man from Baltimore, born on November 23, 1974, to Rochelle Russell and Chris Russell. Neonatal meningitis caused by Group B Streptococcus left him with a significant brain injury, limited speech and motor ability, and extensive support needs. He died in his sleep around 1992 at approximately eighteen years old; his nephew, Marcus Levi Washington III, later carried his name.

Early Life and Background

Levi was the younger brother of Diana Rochelle Russell. After his neonatal meningitis and resulting disabilities, medical professionals recommended placement at Maryland’s Rosewood Center. Rochelle visited the institution, rejected the recommendation, and raised Levi at home with support from Chris and her parents, Teddy and Evie.

Levi spent substantial time at his grandparents’ home. Teddy’s garden, where bright flowers attracted butterflies, became one of Levi’s favorite places.

Personality

Levi responded enthusiastically to bright flowers and butterflies. He expressed enjoyment through laughter, shrieks, and full-body excitement, particularly while spending time in Teddy’s garden.

Speech and Communication Patterns

Levi was minimally speaking, while his receptive language was stronger than his verbal output suggested. He communicated through limited speech, laughter, vocalizations, facial expressions, and body language. His family learned to distinguish his expressions of recognition, enjoyment, discomfort, and distress.

Health and Disabilities

Group B streptococcal meningitis during Levi’s first days of life caused significant neurological injury. He had very limited motor ability and required assistance with mobility and daily care. He also lived with chronic gastrointestinal illness identified within the family as cyclic vomiting syndrome, recurrent seizures, and a fragile immune system.

Levi died in his sleep around 1992. Diana found him when she went to wake him; the precise cause of death was never established.

Diana was seven when Levi was born. She learned his communication, participated in his care, and remained fiercely protective of him throughout his life. After his death, she preserved his photographs and stories and gave her son Levi as a middle name.

Theodore “Teddy” Dorsey and Evelyn “Evie” Dorsey

Teddy and Evie provided practical care and a second home for Levi. Teddy’s garden remained closely associated with Levi’s enjoyment of flowers and butterflies.

Legacy and Memory

Levi’s memory continued through Diana’s stories and photographs, through Marcus III’s middle name, and through Levi’s Garden in the Washington family backyard. The garden’s flowers continued to attract butterflies, linking the memorial to the place Levi had enjoyed with Teddy.
